This is a repeat posting of this mosaic of blue hydrangeas (originally posted June, 2010).
What made me dig into the archives to find this ? On a walk not long ago, I noticed the hydrangea bush which was quite large had been cut down. The last time I noticed it, it was normal/healthy looking, and I was looking forward to its beautiful blooms again this year. Don't know the reason it was cut down, and I am disappointed to see it gone.

Love hydrangeas! I tried growing a couple but never had any luck :( Visiting fom MHC.
ReplyDeleteOh no! I can't believe it was cut down. Those blues are just gorgeous, Glenda. Why on earth would they cut it? Do you think it froze hard and had to be cut?
ReplyDeleteSeveral years ago, we went to visit my cousin in Martha's Vineyard, and I couldn't believe the color of the blue hydrangeas there. They were the deepest shade of blue I've ever seen and simply gorgeous and blooming in profusion. I was mesmerized so I understand your love of these gorgeous flowers.
Mr. Magpie's grandmother had HUGE bushes, and they would bloom in different colors. You have to change the soil PH to get them to do that. I forget what blue requires, but it's the opposite of what pink requires. I haven't had much luck growing them in Florida, but I dearly love them.
Yesterday, we planted pintas, delphinium (an amazing blue and a plant that will probably last all of about fifteen minutes), and a variety of bedding plants. Now, the trick is to keep them alive in the heat of the summer. ;-)
Here's hoping the hydrangeas somehow come back!

Oh how sad, I love hydrangeas! Would love to have tons of them, I only have 2 bushes, hoping they produce blooms this year, we're about a month behind here. fondly ~lynne~

Maybe it will grow back?? We just planted some this year, and I really hope they make it. Mine are pink, and gorgeous...so far!
ReplyDeleteThey're gorgeous! I love hydrangeas and really wish I could get them to grow here. Our soil is rock hard and they can't take the heat in our backyard. Thanks for sharing again:-)

I love hydrangeas... although I don't have any in my yard. Hmmm I should get some, duh! I have heard that if you stick a rusty nail in the soil by the roots, it changes the color of some of the flowers. I need a plant and a rusty nail and I'm all set! ;-)
ReplyDeleteAren't they just gorgeous? How sad to cut one down. I have one small blue bush, not nearly this brilliant. I wanted it to get really big but it has been here a few years and never gets any bigger!

ReplyDeleteOur Endless Summers never have been blue. We need to amend the soil to see if we can get blue. There are no buds at all yet. I am wondering if they are suffering from last year's drought. The Oak Leaf Hydrangea is loaded with buds.
