Gladiolus

In the Summer I usually buy some gladiolus, especially when the grocery store has them at a good price. I finally remembered to get some recently and what a disappointment. The buds are not opening ! I gave each stalk a fresh cut before putting them in water. The ones that were open when I bought them have wilted, but no new blooms have opened. Never had this to happen before.
I dug around in my pictures and found the ones I took of some I had a couple of years ago. Of course I had to play around with the pictures a bit.

Linking up with Mary @ Mosaic Monday.

Off to dead head the gladiolus and give them another chance, or make a trip to the garbage.
Hoping for a quiet, uneventful week. How about you - got any big plans?
What ever your plans - Have a great week.

I worked for a florist for years. If the glads are really tight, I used to put them in a bucket of pretty warm water, cut the stems and break the top peak out of them. You can put a garbage bag over them and put in the warm sun and they will start to open. Then re- cut and put back in warm water. Sometimes if the glads were kept too long at the supplier out of water, they never want to open. If they seem limp stemmed when you get them, I would pass, they are old. If there is some open at the bottom, they were probably left out to do so and then stuck back in the cooler, this sometimes stops them from opening. Good luck, they are such beautiful flowers. They are soo my favorite flower - I had them at our wedding and my MIL promptly said that they were funeral flowers:) She speaks her mind!

Well poop Glenda! That's a bummer! I love them too and have had the same thing happen. I just chalk it up to a bad weather year *sighs* Vanna

Glenda... I remember that gladiola post a while back... they were so beautiful... I can't imagine why your recently bought glads withered and didn't bloom. Its been a while since I have bought some too. I'll pick some up tomorrow for when you come to lunch... We will be having fresh radish sprouts on our sandwiches...

I wonder what happened to make the buds not open, that is sad. I am happy that you are showing your photos though they are lovely. Lovely mosaic, have a great week! =)

Glads are such stately and elegant flowers. I hope you're able to revive yours so that you can enjoy them.

I love glads - they are so regal. If they don't open for you, I would return them to where you bought them for a credit. They may have been stunted by improper storage.

Beautiful mosaic, nonetheless!
