A Dab of This and That Ramble...

First of all:  Why does a smoke alarm always start chirping during the night (when you are trying to sleep),  to tell you the battery is weak?!?

Why, Oh Why"  did I keep all this "stuff" , and where does all this "paper" come from.  Can you tell - I have spent way to much time recently cleaning out and shredding paper?  Thought I had it under control not long ago - that is what I get for "thinking".
*****
Well that was fast:  When daughter checked for Christmas candy on sale the day after Christmas, she found this instead.
The bargains went fast, and the stores are not wasting any time setting up displays for the next occasion to indulge in all that chocolate goodness.

******
Not a good way to start the Holidays: I am sure you all have heard about the storms that left trails of destruction and most importantly - loss of life.  Her area was spared, as well as where I live.  However, many were not as fortunate.
Picture daughter took close to their home on 12/23.  Temps have been unseasonably warm for this time of the year, and unfortunately that is usually a sign, bad weather is on its' way.
 ******
Yum:  Neighbor traveling for the holidays got notice a food gift had been shipped to her home after she left, so called and asked if I could get, check contents to see if anything needed to be refrigerated before she got back, and to help myself to its' contents.  I was tempted, but will wait until she returns and let her decide what she wants to share.
Love the cheeses, spreads and variety of sausages, but also know the sodium content, so will be very selective.

How did this character wind down Christmas Eve:  Making smores of course - Well attempting to do so over a battery operated candle.

Are You ready for Christmas.......

Hard to believe Christmas is less than a week from now.  Am I ready? In one word - NO!
However, at daughter's house.....
Looks like this character is making her appearance again this year.
She decided a halo orange would make a good treat while everyone slept.

Been watching the lady of the house crochet a lot, so decided to give it a try.

Anticipation!

A Dab of This and That Ramble...

A freeze warning was in the forecast:    So what did daughter do?   She grab all her pots of herbs and took them inside, and hoped the last of those planted in ground will make it until they can be harvested, and dried for future use.
Pots of sage, and mint...
How do you dry them? Make garlands and enjoy how pretty they look adorning her open shelves with her collection of vintage dishes.  After dried,  take them down, chop and package them for future use.
Rosemary
Fortunately, I am a recipient of a supply of rosemary, and sage from her which I use in chicken or pork dishes.
******
Sort of a skimpy crop of pecans:  As mentioned in a previous post, a fungus damaged the pecan crop on 3 of their threes this year, but she hoped to still have an abundance from the one tree not affected.  Sounds good, til the neighborhood squirrels and all their friends and relatives showed up, and  harvested what fell before they could get to them, plus could reach the ones at the very top.
Drying before stored for later use.
  ******
A tasty addition to a meal:  Ambrosia is one of those things I don't think about making.  It is like soup - can't make just a small amount.  Anyway,  someone made up  a batch and contributed to our lunch recently.  A tasty treat....
Which made me think of the famous green pistachio, fruit salad named after the  famous hotel, with the initials of WG.  Another day, as rainy, cold, and dreary outside, and not wanting it bad enough to make a trip to the grocery.
*******
I see a  big pot of ham bone soup in the near future.
Any Thanksgiving left overs in your fridge or freezer with a future starring role in another dish?
******
Ahhh! Bacon ! Ever wanted a strip or two of crisp bacon to add on a salad, grilled cheese,  crumbled into an omelet, etc. but did not want the take the time to cook or clean up after frying? Had a package that needed cooking or frozen, so did both. Will freeze and take out as needed, zap in microwave, and add the yum to a dish at a later date as needed.
I seem to have food on the brain today - Cold, rainy, dreary days tend to do that.
******
Time to put the remnants of Fall away....
and this mischievous character will be making an appearance in the near future.
******
Matter of opinion:  I get the notice to upgrade to Windows 10 almost every time I turn the computer these days. Question for those that have used the free upgrade:  Are you happy with the upgrade or regret making the change?  Any minor or big issues that had to be worked out? I have done a bit of research and am seeing some mixed reviews, so would like to hear  some tried and true opinions.

Colors of Fall - Part 2....

The leaves changed colors, then fluttered down.
Click on pics to enlarge.
Actually this looks good compared to what it is now.  A cold front came thru with strong winds, and It is now knee deep in leaves and limbs.  The mums are faux, as I never got around to making the yearly trip for mums and a pumpkin or two - or more. Time is flying by, and Fall really snuck up on me this year,

On a Foggy Fall Morning......

The fog rolled in on a cool Fall morning, and has a very eerie look.
The photos speak for themselves.

Colors of Fall...

Had hoped to have some new pics of the beautiful colors of Fall to share this week, but the weather did not cooperate - lots of dreary, gloomy, soggy days recently.  "They" predicted we would see some sunshine the last couple of day, but "Mom Nature" had other plans.
Daughter did send this one of an early morning sunrise.
A Fall Sunrise - 2015
The clouds almost look like the side of a mountain on fire.
Then I dug around in pics I took 3 years ago and found a few to add to the post.

Can you guess who her big Sister dressed up as to attend a Halloween event?!?
Little hint - She is missing her fedora. :-D

ETA: She was going for the Stevie Nicks look. The event was outdoors and rain was predicted so she did not attend.  Not a problem, as she was more interested in hanging out with some friends.

One of Those Rambles...

Was it a bird?   Sitting at the computer, staring out the glass door, and what do I  see?  A large, thick envelope came flying over the gate. Took me a few to decide I may need to go see what that was all about.  Turns out to be something sent "overnight" delivery.  Sure glad it was not anything breakable.

Started this post several days ago when the first large envelope came flying over the gate. Since then have had  a repeat performance - another large envelope, twice as thick as the first one,  came flying over the gate a couple days later.  Same delivery company.  Geesh !
*****
Breakfast Food:   I have mentioned before (I think) - I am not big on eating breakfast. Now is someone else did the cooking and cleaning up afterwards, I may indulge on occasion.   Like a lot of "breakfast type foods" -  just do not want them early in the AM. I can eat some breakfast items for brunch, lunch or dinner without a problem. Out and about running errands, etc. one day recently,  stopped at a local place known for their casseroles to go. Don't stop often as a bit pricey, but did buy a few items, one being a breakfast casserole.  Looked like a souffle when came out of the oven.....
then it fell.  Still very light and tasty.  How about you - Do you eat breakfast foods for other meals during the day? As I type this, wishing I had a couple of scrambled eggs, with a couple of sausage patties, couple of thin, crisp slices of hickory smoked bacon, and don't forget the skillet toast with home made strawberry jam.
*******
The "L" :  I know I have not mentioned the "To Do List" in a long time. Aren't you glad?    Reason being - I have not worked on it in a long time.  A very lonnnnnng time !   Oh, I have added to it, just not marking off things that need to be done very often.
Did donate several hardback books to a library for a sale. Still have another stack of hardbacks and magazines pertaining to miniature dolls houses and/or miniature collections.  Not sure what their destiny is just yet.

Learned one thing for sure.:   Be care what you collect, because you may want/need  to scale down some day,  and that is when you find out your children, Grands, etc. just may not have an interest in, or have room for the same things  Ask me how I know ?!? :/
Some clothing items, and shoes to far gone for donation status, were sent to the garbage.  Have not even made a dent in the closets.
*******
The saga of the sprouting sweet tater:  You may (or may not) remember the sweet potatoes that started putting out sprouts  before they got cooked.
Passed them along to daughter who cut the sprouts off, planted them, and ended up with a planter of sweet potato vines.  Can't locate pic or post - guessing it got deleted on one of my "house cleaning"  days.  Any way - the plant appeared to be dying, so she pulled any pieces off that still looked alive, and put them in water to see if they will root.  When cleaning out the pot, found little sweet potatoes growing.  The longest only about 2 to 3 inches long.
She said the pot she grew the plants in was too small for them to grow very big, and thinking if she had planted the sprouts in the ground she might have ended up with a nice bunch of "sweet taters".
 *********
Had a bad night? :  Recently she spent most of the night in the emergency room with husband, who decided to try passing  kidney stones (yes - plural) during the night.  Then a couple more nights following with lack of adequate sleep.  Why do things like that always happen late or during the night?   Longer story, but will spare you the details.  Anyway........Friends showed up on her door step with cupcakes and an extra large coffee cup so she would not have to refill it so often trying to stay awake.

That Time of the Year....

It is that time of the year again.....
On the road again  (not me).....
For daughter and her family, it is football games on Friday nights, often times band competition on Saturdays, and after school practice, practice, practice.   Is Sunday the only day of the week to relax?   Maybe !!  But not if the pecans are falling, and you have to hurry and grab what you can before the squirrels show up.
She is hoping to harvest at least 3 gallons from one tree.  They have 3 other trees, however, a fungus took over and damaged the pecans on those trees.
*******
Also, with the abundance of apples in the markets this time of the year, she found time to make up a batch of applesauce.  She said it smelled and tasted like apple pie.   Yummy!!

Oh, and while she was "on a roll", she  started a batch of apple cider vinegar...
Combined in one large jar, and fermenting - she assured me it was not a science project.
 ******
Glad she learned her preserving/canning skills from someone else, because I was good at stocking the freezer, not jars.
Have an enjoyable and safe weekend.
